                    Understanding Body Mass Index (BMI)
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple calculation using a person's height and weight. The formula was developed in the 1830s by Lambert Adolphe Jacques Quetelet. It is used as a screening tool to identify potential weight problems for adults by categorizing them as underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese.
BMI Formula
- Metric Units: BMI = weight (kg) / [height (m)]2
- Imperial Units: BMI = 703 × weight (lbs) / [height (in)]2
BMI Categories for Adults
The following categories are recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) for adults over 20 years old:
| BMI | Weight Status |
|---|---|
| Below 18.5 | Underweight |
| 18.5 – 24.9 | Normal weight |
| 25.0 – 29.9 | Overweight |
| 30.0 and Above | Obesity |
Disclaimer: The BMI is a useful general indicator, but it has limitations. It does not distinguish between body fat and muscle mass. Therefore, muscular individuals (like athletes) may have a high BMI but low body fat. It is also not appropriate for children, teenagers, pregnant women, or the elderly. Always consult a healthcare professional for a comprehensive health assessment.
