What is a QR Code?
A QR Code, or Quick Response code, is a type of two-dimensional barcode that can store a variety of information. Unlike a traditional barcode that holds data in one direction, a QR code holds it in two (horizontally and vertically), allowing it to store significantly more data in a smaller space. They are designed to be scanned quickly and easily by smartphones and other devices.
How Do QR Codes Work?
QR codes use a pattern of black and white squares to encode data. Your phone's camera, along with a QR code reader app, can decode this pattern to reveal the stored information. Key features of the code's design, like the large squares in three corners (finder patterns), allow it to be read from any angle. They also feature built-in error correction, which means they can still be scanned even if a part of the code is damaged or dirty.
Common Uses for QR Codes
- Marketing & Advertising: Linking physical ads (posters, flyers, product packaging) to online content like websites, videos, or social media pages.
- Contactless Services: Providing access to restaurant menus, payment portals, and event check-ins without physical contact.
- Information Sharing: Quickly sharing Wi-Fi network credentials, contact information (vCards), or event details.
- Product Authentication & Tracking: Used in supply chains to track products and verify their authenticity.
- Personal Use: Sharing a link to your personal portfolio, social media profile, or even a simple text message.
